Libre Writer spell check not working

Spell check is an important part of any modern text processor. We need to ensure it is is working correctly. This is a common error on Libre Office that can be easily rectified.

Tools > Options > Language Settings > General > Default languages for Documents > Western

For English, only five English locales are supported for spellcheck here, you need to ensure that one of these is set up for your system for spellcheck to work.

US, UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa are available. They are typically available by default, but they need to be selected in the “Default Languages for Documents” under the Western tab for them to work.

Set language for documents to your appropriate locale, and then spell check will work for you.

If you need spell check support for other languages, Hunspell is the name of the directory that you need.

English dictionaries are installed by default – if you need another dictionary such as French then it can be be installed with a package manager such as apt on a Debian/Ubuntu system

sudo apt install hunspell-fr
Then reload Libre Office writer for changes to take effect – you will then see in the drop down under Default Languages for Documents that the French language is available. A capital A should appear next to all the French locales, which indicates that the spell check dictionary is available.

The best way to search for your particular language is to search by country code, so “de” for German, “it” for Italy , etc.

apt search hunspell-de
I hope this helps someone out there.
